影片故事源于编剧兼制作人大卫·E·凯利的凭空想象，靠电视剧起家的凯利曾六获艾美奖，一向对反传统人物、机智爽快的对白和意想不到的幽默情有独钟，《平静的湖》也同样一脉相承。
在片中扮演凯丽·斯科特的布里吉特·芳达说：“当第一次看到剧本时，我认为它是古怪而奇妙的混合体。大卫就像一个技艺精湛的大厨，你永远不知道他的配料是什么，但尝上去都是美味。他创造的有趣而独特的人物总是让你爱恨交加。”
执导本片的史蒂夫·迈纳曾拍摄《十三号星期五》系列电影、《H20抓鬼节》，《天荒情未了》和《跃马英雄》。他说：“我一直喜欢将多种类型片融为一体，而大卫的剧本正是如此，非比寻常的人物、真实骇人的瞬间和恰到好处的风趣幽默无与伦比的融合在一起。”
片中让人触目惊心的巨鳄其实是由3只仿真机器鳄鱼联合扮演的，由特效大师斯坦·温斯顿负责设计，每只机器鳄鱼都需要3到6名特效技师操作。第一只鳄鱼被剧组人员称为“原型”，几乎全部依靠气压装置驱动，用于拍摄鳄鱼颚部和头部动作。工程师们充分关注机器鳄鱼的每一个细节，哪怕是上下眼睑的微妙抽搐都能得以体现。第二只鳄鱼绰号“英雄鳄”，用于拍摄水上场景，所需零件数量是第一只的5倍。其电脑系统运用了遥感技术，技师可以用手做出动作，并将动作信息传递给机器鳄鱼，鳄鱼于是随之以相同速度完成相同动作。在片中扯掉卡车保险杠、直升机浮筒和猛吞活熊的正是“英雄鳄”。第三只鳄鱼被称作“游泳鳄”，用于拍摄水中的全身镜头，其推进系统可以提供300匹马力，以让鳄鱼如水中蛟龙般迅猛异常。为防止机械鳄鱼的各种装置、接缝和电线受潮，剧组还使用了军用防水材料。此外，Digital Domain特效公司还为影片制作了电脑鳄鱼，以完成鳄鱼在陆地上疯狂破坏的场景。
片中部分场景在加拿大BC省的Shawnigan、Buntzen和Hayward湖实景拍摄，为拍摄有机器鳄鱼出现的复杂场景，剧组在温哥华城外的萨里（Surrey）修建了一个巨型水池。艺术指导约翰·威雷特认为挖设水池非常必要，因为自然水域的水下情况格外复杂，他说：“如果出现意外，维修机器鳄鱼极其困难，而且我们要达到一定深度，并且可以进行追踪拍摄，所以建造水池势在必行。”
整个水池耗时5个月才修建完成，蓄水量高达150万加仑。由于当地多雨，所以设计部门还在水池安装了大型排水系统。另外，为让演员能在舒适的环境中完成拍摄，水池还具有泳池一般的加热功能。在水池周围，剧组栽种了大量植被，以形成天然湖的自然景观。- Video
