本片报告的是19世纪一个罗密欧和朱丽叶式的恋爱故事。故事以1857年9月11日发生的美洲历史上著名的高原惨案为布景，一批去往加利福尼亚的马车队路经犹他州南部，摩门教探知其中有1838年曾介入履行“剿灭令”，强行将摩门教徒驱逐出密苏里州的Han's Mill惨案的凶手，随即作出复仇决议。他们黑暗结合印第安人部落，对车队包围突袭，以天主的名义击毙和正法120名男女，只要17名10岁以下儿童幸免。后来，介入批示策划的摩门教首领John D.Lee被判死刑，20年后，摩门教带领人杨百翰的养子被判正法刑。由于电影所反应出来的概念，到明天这个事务一向饱受争议。
两个年轻人，一个是摩门教徒，是当地摩门主教的儿子，另一个是车骑兵牧师的小女儿，是从阿肯色州迁往加利福尼亚的移民，不管两个家属之间的冤仇多深，也不管世俗的看法何等固执，两人还是萌生了美丽动听的恋爱之苗，向对方倾吐自己的倾慕之情……
