简 介
幕末期间，时势动乱，暗流涌动。甲州军人机龙之助（仲代達矢 饰）剑术绝伦，却具有一颗邪恶阴晦之心。在一次剑术角逐前夜，对手宇津木文之丞（中谷一郎 饰）的妻子阿滨（新珠三千代 饰）哀告他败给丈夫，甚至不惜委身于他。但是在越日的对决中，龙之助仍然以绝对上风杀死文之丞。在此以后 ，他和被休的阿滨分开甲州，到处为家。两年后，他以杀手身份加入新选组，替幕府斩杀抵挡义士。在此时代，文之丞弟弟戎马（加山雄三 饰）也来至江户，并拜入剑豪岛田虎之助（三船敏郎 饰）的门下，期待为兄长报仇的良机。宿命的重逢无可避免……
本片按照中里介山同名原著中“甲源一刀流の巻 - 03 壬生と島原の巻”部分改编。该小说在报纸上连载23年，被称作“天下上最长的历史小说”。
