简 介
本片用一个香港差人从理想青年酿成一代枭雄的进程，反应了香港五六十年月的社会题目。
1949年，热血青年雷洛（刘德华 饰）成为差人。那时，香港差人报酬不高，差人向商户们收取庇护费的潜法则蔚然成风，雷洛不愿意和他们随波逐流，遭到同事们的排挤，也获咎了权倾一时的探长颜同（秦沛 饰），面临停职的危险，但是，探长陈统(关海山 饰)悄悄欣赏他，对他保护有加。
雷洛和杂货店老板的女儿阿霞（邱淑贞 饰）两情相悦，可是阿霞的怙恃不愿意女儿随着他刻苦，各式阻止。雷洛借酒解愁，到黑社会的赌场闹事，被人殴打，多亏探长陈统搭救，并帮他筹到了五万元的聘礼。
可是，1951年九龙东头村的大火，烧毁了雷洛的美梦。雷洛一家侥幸逃走，阿霞家人却葬身火海，阿霞本人也音信全无。
转眼到了50年月末，雷洛履历了警队派系排挤，几经浮沉，渐渐顺应了香港警界，收庇护费的工作也做得驾轻就熟。他有幸娶到了“大捞家”白饭鱼的女儿，美丽泼辣白月娥（张敏 饰），靠着岳父的大力支持和自己在弹压1957年九龙暴乱中的出色表示，荣升探长。
成为探长的雷诺标准了管区内收取庇护费的制度，削减了各界抵触，深得下级的重视。恰逢油尖区探长退休，雷洛和颜同都成为了这个职位的有力合作者，二人各自展开了行动，一时如火如荼，此时，雷洛意外碰见了一小我，让他震动不已……
