简 介
哈利·道尔顿博士（皮尔斯·布鲁斯南 Pierce Brosnan 饰）是美国地质勘察中心的一位火山学专家，此次他被派到但丁峰上的一个小城镇观察，而小城镇地点的但丁峰正是华盛顿四周的一座休眠火山。哈利来到镇上，恰逢市长蕾切尔（琳达·汉密尔顿 Linda Hamilton 饰）在主持庆贺活动，由于小镇刚刚获得了全美最好居住情况第二名的大奖。蕾切尔与她的两个孩子带哈利四周参观，途经温泉湖畔，哈利留意到湖水酸度太高，并发现了两句煮熟的浮尸。哈利顿豪情况不妙，火山极有能够喷发，并倡议蕾切尔公布预警，但是与哈利同业的下属保罗却以为他是反应过度，并筹算在一周的勘察使命完成后打道回府，镇委会也出于各种好处目标，拒绝公布预警。但是就在一天夜里，镇上的水忽然被硫磺净化，而这正是火山喷发的预兆，蕾切尔立即启动了全民撤离计划，但是她的母亲却在山腰上拒绝撤离。就在此时，火山已不成抑止地喷发了……
