　　烈日当头，纽约大城市艺术博物馆，一幅正在展出的印象派大师莫内的无价名画失窃。高明的偷盗手段，加上因高温完全生效的红外线监控系统，都让这起奥秘的失窃案加倍扑朔迷离。亿万富翁托马斯·克劳恩（皮尔斯·布鲁斯南 Pierce Brosnan饰），一位金玉合座的上流巨贾兼收藏家。当金钱再也不能带给他任何满足感时，惟有那些金钱买不到的工具才能引发他的爱好，比如这件代价千金。美貌聪明的女观察员凯瑟琳·班宁（蕾妮·罗素 Rene Russo饰）负责全权处置此失窃事务。与此同时，警方也派出了精明的迈克尔·麦克甘（丹尼斯·利瑞 Denis Leary饰）警官观察此案。班宁与麦克甘不谋而合地将克劳恩列为头号怀疑人，而克劳恩更被这位与众分歧的女子所深深吸引。
