　　这部斯诺登题材的电影首要基于两本书，一本是英国《卫报》（Guardian）记者卢克·哈丁（Luke Harding）今年头刚刚出书的的《斯诺登档案：天下头号通缉犯的内幕故事》（The Snowden Files: The Inside Story of the World’s Most Wanted Man），该书周全记录了爱德华·斯诺登是若何由于其自在主义代价观与美国政府的监听计划发生抵触，而从一位虔诚的共和党人成为美国政府口中的“叛国者”的。
　　第二本书则是斯诺登在俄罗斯的律师Anatoly Kucherena所写的《章鱼的时候》（Time Of The Octopus），这本书对斯诺登若何潜藏到俄罗斯、以及申请政治庇护的进程有着具体的论述。
