　　70年月初，伦敦。奥秘的美国作家约翰·弗尼John Verney（理查德·威德马克饰）来到他所喜好的亨利·贝多斯Henry Beddows（德诺姆·艾略特饰）的艺术画廊奉告其帮助事项。现在，亨利正试图摆脱一个撒旦邪教对他自己及他女儿凯瑟琳Catherine（娜塔莎·金斯基饰）的影响，他请求亨利的帮助，去奥秘接机——凯瑟琳作为一位修女，一向在德国巴伐利亚一个名为“耶和华的孩子们”的与世隔断的湖心修道院修行，每年只要一次，即在她的生日时代才被答应回到英国与她的父亲团圆。
