　　麦克是一个奇迹成功的白人移民律师，他和妻子克莱尔有一个十几岁的儿子罗伯托。麦克和克莱尔有一座宽阔的室第，克莱尔热情地告诉标致金发保姆佩顿她计划盖一个温室。佩顿来克莱尔家工作是为了替夫报仇，其夫是一个妇科医生，因克莱尔控告他有不端行为而自杀了。但克莱尔待她就像好朋友一样。一个黑人所罗门成为这家人喜好的家丁。一天，麦克的汽车在一个黑人居住区出了故障，遭到一群强盗的攻击。多亏一位名叫西蒙的青年黑人司机实时相救。麦克对他非常感激。西蒙的姐姐和她十儿岁的儿子生活在匪帮活动疯狂的街区，她为儿子的前途担忧。麦克的朋友戴维斯被疯狂的强盗抢劫，麦克的一位邻人因心脏病爆发拌死。麦克自己也穿一次几乎被汽车撞倒。在黑人居住区，暴行仍然通顺无阻。西蒙的家从黑人区搬到了白人区。麦克为了报答西蒙的拯救之恩，为他先容女友。西蒙曾对麦克说，他常想去大峡谷看一看。此日两家人一路到了大峡谷，在宏伟壮见的大峡谷眼前，这些在大都会生活的人发出阵阵感慨。　　具有幸运完竣家庭的麦可，在某次家庭集会后，因车子抛锚误闯黑人社区时，并被黑人青年所围堵，幸亏，被在汽车修理厂工作的赛门所搭救，而成为无话不谈的好友。相谈甚欢的两人，从未因分歧肤色的原因而有所芥蒂，反而加倍顾惜彼其间的友谊，经常相约泛论相互的困扰与生活上的点点滴滴，甚至是相互的家庭题目……
