　　《南承平洋》布景为二次天下大战美国水兵占据南承平洋一小岛之时；岛上最有钱的迪贝克战前已前土著女子成婚生下两子，但孩子的母亲归天得早。水兵少尉护士奈莉．佛布许来自守旧的阿肯色州小镇，爱上了迪贝克，但由于其二个混血儿拖油瓶，不由略略犹疑。她对迪贝克倾慕不已，但面临母亲严来信，只得狠心拒绝。岛上别的一个大出风头的人物是万事通型的“血腥玛丽”广受美国驻军接待；一个来公费城的盖博中尉对玛丽的女儿莉亚深有好感，可是也挂念其土著身份；玛丽以一首小岛情歌替女儿做了媒，使盖博捐弃了偏见，热情挥洒热情。但随着两段异国爱情越形白热，成婚成家的压力也越来越明显；迪贝克在向奈莉求婚被拒后自愿与盖博深入战区探军情；盖博中弹身亡，迪贝克亦一度失落，使得奈莉认清她对迪贝克的豪情；她昼夜陪伴迪贝克的幼后代，与他们培育出豪情，更对自己将迪贝克逼上敌阵后悔不已。幸亏迪贝克安然返归，有情人终成家属。
